A letter from Mom with @WhitleyCoxBooks

A letter to my toddler. From the exhausted, frayed mind of a mother…
Dear Sweet, beautiful toddler of mine,
Now most mums  pledge, vow, degree or whatever that they will love you forever, like you for always (hate to break it to you sweetheart, but I only like you sometimes, other times I’m contemplating selling you on Etsy) that they would jump in front of a bus for you, take a bullet, lift a car off your body, give you the last cookie and all that lovely maternal stuff. And I mean all of that too, I really do. You are my magnum opus, the best thing I’ve ever made, and I can’t imagine my life without you.
But child…
I pledge, I solemnly vow, with the internet as my witness, that when I am old and gray and wrinkly, with WTF lines between my brows and holy shit creases on my forehead deeper than Valles Marineris (look it up, it’s a big canyon on Mars) that I will throw stuff out of the car and out of my wheelchair at the most inopportune time, just to piss you off. That when you are pushing me through the park for a leisurely stroll, talking about your children and how well they’re doing in school, I will be plotting how and when I can throw my dentures into the grass, and then wail and moan and cry about it, yelling “uh oh, uh oh” twenty seconds later. Sending you on a wild goose chase to look for them and then struggle to calm me down as I pitch an enormous fit over why I can’t put my caked-in-mud dentures back in my mouth.
That when you invite me over for dinner, I will take one bite of the meal (even if it’s delicious and I would normally lick the plate clean) and then throw my hands in the air and announce “all done” only to then open your fridge and stand in front of it for ten minutes. And I may or may not grab something, like a container of yogurt, take it to the floor, sit down and eat it with my hands right out of the tub. Or maybe I won’t eat that yogurt, maybe I’ll just finger-paint your leather couch with it, or wave my spoon around until flecks of yogurt splatter all over the room like beautiful abstract cultured dairy art, who knows? It may have you questioning my senility, and I obviously can’t speak for the future, but I can only hope that even senile I’ll have the sense of humor and wherewithal to exact my revenge.
I will never blame you for your birth or the grueling 29 hours of “discomfort” I endured to finally meet you, never. That was completely self-inflicted; I’d do it all again in a heartbeat if I had to. And I’m guessing you weren’t exactly enjoying those 29 hours either, so let’s just call that one a draw. But now my little peanut, my gorgeous human who has to carry her purse around wherever she goes, and with a smile so bright I’m forced to wear sunglasses indoors, all your weird little “quirks” are fair game for payback.
So, if one day you happen to find random pieces of celery or carrot sticks hidden among your bath towels or stuffed into the baseboard heaters, or you go to pull your covers back and there is a pair of dentures or an apple with some bite marks or a chunk of cheese lying on your pillow, don’t go all batshit cray-cray on your own children just yet. Maybe it wasn’t them, or maybe it was, maybe grandma taught them a new game (revenge minions!) but stop and think for a second before you ban little Euphegenia from her time machine for a week. Because maybe, just maybe it was grandma finally following through with her solemn vow, the pledge that she made all those years ago on a rainy fall afternoon, at her wits end, as she impatiently waited for the clock to hit 5:00 and the wine cork was popped. While you munched on Veggie Straws, oblivious to my frayed nerves and watched Paw Patrol with your friend. Because child, I love you, but revenge is a dish best served cold, just like my dinner, apparently.
xoxo
Quick & Dirty featured in the boxed set Sultry Nights
Humiliated and angry Parker Ryan is ready to erase every last trace of her ex from her mind, body, and soul. Of course, she can be adventurous. Exciting. Sexy. No matter what he said. She needs an exorcism, and Tate McAllister and the island of Moorea in Tahiti are just the man and place to do it. Tate is perfect for the job: billionaire resort owner, scuba instructor, philanthropist and, let’s face it, sex god. So maybe the affair isn’t the wisest move when she has to write her damn feature piece and review the hotel, but if he’s ready and willing to wow her in and out of the bedroom for the next ten days, the fling will be worth it. Parker can get the job done and have Tate fulfill all her fantasies, and she won’t, repeat won’t fall in love with the man. Even if every part of her wants to.

Author Bio
A West Coast baby born and raised, Whitley is married to her high school sweetheart and together they have a spirited toddler and a fluffy dog. She spends her days making food that gets thrown on the floor, vacuuming Cheerios out from under the couch and making sure that the dog food doesn’t end up in the air conditioner. But when nap time comes, and it’s not quite wine o’clock, Whitley sits down, avoids the pile of laundry on the couch, and writes.
A lover of all things decadent; wine, cheese, chocolate and spicy erotic romance, Whitley brings the humorous side of sex, the ridiculous side of relationships and the suspense of everyday life into her stories. With mommy wars, body issues, threesomes, bondage and role-playing, these books have everything we need to satisfy the curious kink in all of us.

#ParanormalRomance Year Of The Cat by Janice Seagraves

Welcome fall.
Cool weather and fall leaves.
Sweaters and jackets.
Halloween and Thanksgiving.
Scary stories and movies.

What is your favorite thing about fall?

Here's a scary excerpt from Year of the Cat.

YearoftheCat

Blurb: Haunted by the loss of his parents, Jared Catterick earns his keep working for the Catclaw Clan. But, once he finds out the truth he runs to his one true mate, Morgan, who he had met while she was on holiday.
When his past and present collide, it’s worse than he imagined and he’s forced to fight for his life.
heart knot
Excerpt:
Auntie walked into the middle of the hollow. “We the Catcall Clan are gathered here together to witness a challenge. Called by Munch son of Tiger, who challenges Jared Catterick son of nobody.”
“I am the son of somebody,” Jared yelled. The sudden flow of anger had his heart pounding hard against his ribs.
“Who? What are their names?” Auntie crossed her arm and leaned on one hip and tapped a toe.
“I donna remember. I was too young when they killed them and took me away,” Jared muttered. “And she knows that.”
“Is Catterick your real last name?” Killer asked him in the canine speech.
“Aye. I donna remember much about me old life, but I never forgot me name.”
“Just tell her Mr. and Mrs. Catterick,” Killer said.
“Me parents were Mr. and Mrs. Catterick,” Jared said in a loud clear voice.
A few people around the hollow snickered.
Auntie gave a quick nod. “Jared son of Mr. and Mrs. Catterick. Munch challenges you for the death of his da, Tiger.”
Munch marched to Auntie’s side. He was every bit as big as his father. Well-muscled and not just tall but wide. Where Tiger’s hair was gray and white, Munch was blond and black. Another man accompanied him, his second, a tall, lanky male named Boyd. Jared knew him well, even though he was younger.
“Och. Here we go,” Jared told Killer and walked out into the middle of the hollow.
“He’s big,” Killer said in the canine speech.
“And ugly. I wouldna want to ride him into battle.”
Killer stayed at his side. “Psst.”
“Eh?”
“You can fight, right?” Killer asked.
“Aye.”
“Good to know.”
Auntie looked at both males. “Jared, as the challenged, you may decide on weapons and forms.”
“Human and no weapons,” Jared said.
“Very well,” Auntie said. “You may use your feet, hands, elbows and knees. Even your head if you feel the need.”
“What aboot sticks and stones?” Munch asked, his voice youthful.
“Will break my bones,” Jared said under his breath.
Killer snickered.
“No weapons,” Auntie shook a finger at Munch. “That includes sticks and stones.”
“Well,” Munch crossed his arms, “since I canna change into cat form, I think I should be able to use whatever I find in the hollow.”
“This isn’t a free-for-all, Munch. There is discipline to a challenge. You must remain in your human form and fight like a human. With this match, we’ll have a square go.”
“Not very cat-like.” Munch sniffed.
Auntie fisted her hands and leaned toward Munch. “You’re not a cat. You are a shifter. You shift between three forms. Now stay with one for the duration of the fight.”
“Doesn’t he understand?” Killer asked.
“A bit daft that one,” Jared muttered back. Munch doesn’t seem have a lot of self-control. Unlike Tiger who would have done exactly what Auntie said to the letter.
“Seconds, to the side.” Auntie pointed. “You may view the fight only. Do not interfere unless your partner is hurt or someone breaks the rules.”
Both Boyd and Killer trotted to edge of the clearing.
Jared stood facing Munch. Several feet separated them. Jared shook out his arms, moved his head from side to side, and loosened his muscles.
Auntie raised her hand and did a karate chop between them. “Now fight.”
“I swear on me da’s grave, I will end you!” Munch roared and the skin on his face boiled. His hands burst out of his gloves and feet from his boots. The shift made Munch bigger, tearing his clothes. He stopped in the in-between state, like movie werewolves of old, but in this case half-cat and half-human. The only thing that remained of his clothes was his black overall snow pants and even that stretched taunt across him. Extending his claws, he snarled and reached for Jared. “I want to see you bleedin’.”

Naming Characters

Naming characters isn't easy. There are some basic rules for naming characters in a romance novel:
  1. In contemporary realistic fiction, the names has to be common enough that most readers can pronounce it. It's annoying to have to guess at how to say the name. It took me forever to get Declan right (DECK-lan, not DE-clan,) and that mostly happened because my friend named her son Declan. Nah, who am I kidding? I totally still say De-clan. Once you get it wrong, there's no going back. Fantasy and science fiction don't have to abide by this rule, though your made-up names should be phonetically accurate. Don't go throwing a silent S in there.
  2. Names need to fit the character's personality. If she's quirky, the name has to be
quirky. For example, in Re/Viewed, my heroine's name is Tru, which is short for Gertrude. This tells you that her family is traditional, but she breaks the mold. Jessica from SAFE Security/Forging Love was named after a cat my mom had. She was feisty and a fighter, but sweet and loving at the same time, which fits the character.
  3. I need to keep a list of all the characters I've ever used in a series, for parts large and small, because I don't want to confuse readers by using names a second time.

Complicating this issue are rules based on personal preferences.
  1. I can't pick names that are very popular today or in the last 18 years. I can't read romances where the main characters have my kids' names. It doesn't matter how much I like the author. I'm sure other people are the same. You don't want to read a story where the heroine is moaning your son's name or the hero is telling someone with your daughter's name how sexy she looks in that lingerie. I'll never use my kids' names in a book, not even for a supporting character.
  2. Then there are the names of other people you know well. I still have trouble with David (Re/Leased, Treasure Me, Switching It Up) because I have two cousins with that name (different sides of the family.) David was named by a reader who won a contest, and she chose to name him after her husband. My gut reaction was to scream, "NO! I changed their diapers!" but it was a contest, and the only guideline I gave was that the last name needed to start with an E. She chose Eastridge. She also named Autumn/Brea, but I got over that one quickly. I've only met a few Autumns in my time, and none were relatives.
  3. As a teacher, so many names are out-of-bounds at different times. One recurring nightmare I have is when I write a character who has a name that hasn't appeared in my classroom, and then the next year, before I'm finished writing the novel, I get a student with that name. Oh, wait. That happens all the time. Awkward. Name popularity comes in waves, so I'll use a name once they fall out of favor and the kid has faded from my memory, like Darcy, Katrina, Amy, Jessica, or Breanna. Fifteen years ago, I had 2-3 per class. Now I have none. Right now, I'm avoiding Hayden, Chloe, and anything that uses "Maddie" or "Mack" as a nickname. I have at least 6 of each right now.
What does that leave me? A lot, actually. I spend a lot of time on babynames.com or on a fake name generator site to find names. Sometimes I'll watch the closing credits of a movie to harvest names. Either way, it usually works out.

In other news: Re/Leased is on sale this month for 99 cents. If you haven't read the series, this is a great jumping-on point, as it introduces new characters and a new storyline. It's the story that launched the SAFE Security series, so if you like David and Autumn, you'll be happy to know their story continues in two more novels. (It's not a trilogy. No cliffhangers. These are complete, self-contained stories.)

It's on sale because my street team, Read Between the Wines is featuring it as the Book of the Month. I'll be doing a live chat in that group on Sept 28, and I hope to see you there.

Humorous Punctuation Errors

Today, September 24, is National Punctuation Day. The nuns in my Catholic schools beat us over the heads with punctuation rules, and grammar and spelling, too. Much of it stuck. Because we text and email now doesn’t mean we can throw good punctuation out the window with the typewriter.

Despite the nuns’ training, I don’t always get punctuation right, but I try. I’m sorry to say some authors don’t try too hard. I’ve read many books lately, both indie and from major publishers, with glaring punctuation errors, mostly comma errors. One thing that really bothers me is when there isn’t a comma before a person’s proper name: as in, “Hi Mary.” Correct punctuation is “Hi, Mary.” I’ve been seeing this a lot.

Punctuation can change the meaning of a sentence. I scoured the internet for examples of how punctuation can change meanings. Here are some humorous ones.

This first one is correct:

Dear John:
I want a man who knows what love is all about. You are generous, kind, thoughtful. People who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me for other men. I yearn for you. I have no feelings whatsoever when we’re apart. I can be forever happy–will you let me be yours?

This is what happens to the same statement when it’s not punctuated correctly:

Dear John,
I want a man who knows what love is. All about you are generous, kind, thoughtful people, who are not like you. Admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me. For other men, I yearn. For you, I have no feelings whatsoever. When we’re apart, I can be forever happy. Will you let me be?

More examples:
Woman without her man is nothing.
Woman, without her, man is nothing.

Let’s eat Grandpa.
Let’s eat, Grandpa.

All those out there who like to cook and eat my wife made a new blog.
All those out there who like to cook and eat, my wife made a new blog.

Can you figure out where the commas go in this one?
Attention: Toilet only for disabled elderly pregnant children.

This magazine cover with Rachel Ray says it all.

Or this one:

Hunters please use caution when hunting pedestrians using walk trails.

See how a comma can change these two below?
Most of the time, travelers worry about their luggage.
Most of the time travelers worry about their luggage.

Are there any punctuation errors that bother you? I’d love to hear them.

New Releases, now available for pre-order on Amazon, iBooks, and Kobo.
I’ve got a new series, Gambling on Love, and all three stories are available for pre-order, release date for all, October 15. I’ve tried very hard to avoid punctuation errors. Don’t be too hard on me if you find some.

Serendipity and Guardian Angels with Author @LiviaQuinn #RB4U #Romance

Two weeks ago I was trudging up a flight of steep steps in Penzance, United Kingdom, dragging my thirty pound suitcase and my IT FELT LIKE fifty pound backpack. My friend and I got to the front door of the B&B finally breathing a sigh of relief. We were four hours early but we'd sent an email to the host advising her of that so we planned on dropping our bags and getting right to the sightseeing since we only had two nights in Cornwall and wanted to make the best of it.

Well, best laid plans and all that…the door was locked and the sign read "our for the day". WHAT?!!! Once again, we realized how hampered we were not to have internet, phone or GPS in the UK. I was kicking myself for the fourth time when a woman started up the adjoining steps toward the adjacent B&B.

My friend asked if she happened to know our host or how we might contact her. Aneliese was from Australia and was so delightful. She offered to let us park our bags in her room next door, leave a message for our host, and then proceeded to give us the lowdown on how to get around in Cornwall on the bus system. She save our patooties as we'd been unable to get good information about the buses in Penzance. On her advice we took a bus that took us all around the coastline of Cornwall from Penzance to Lands End to St. Ives.

This happened again and again, when we were lost, needed a little direction or flat out needed rescuing. It's the same everywhere. Whether you're traveling or at home. Downtown in your local community or on the internet, I find people are always willing to lend a helping hand.

I've experienced this so much in the last months since I've had vision problems and was struggling to get my books ready to meet a deadline. People stepped up to help edit, fit me in for covers and give advice on promo and strategy.

It feels good to look ahead and see a full four months of books releases. Ridge, the first book in my rebranded Men of Honor series just went live https://bookstoread.com/ridge and the sixth book in my paranormal series, Blood Moon, is up for preorder in the Moonlight Magic box set for just $0.99 for a limited time with nineteen other fabulous authors.

Now, our friends in my neighboring states are hurting because of the hurricanes. I invite you to be a part of the recovery efforts which take a very long time. Thanks.

She was on a journey to reclaim her soul

Sequel to Dangerous Addiction
When Fallon Crowe discovered her submissive side, she indulged it fully, reveling in her erotic nature—until she stepped into the brutally possessive world of Brian Willoughby. More than a year after she was literally dragged away from his abusive clutches, Fallon is finally building a new life with Cord Jamieson, a Dom who reminds her that punishment can be loving, pain an aphrodisiac.
But when Fallon unexpectedly runs into Brian, he reawakens an addiction that never quite died. Now she’s torn between the caring relationship she’s established with Cord, and Brian’s darkly mesmerizing lifestyle that goes beyond safe, sane and consensual.
The choice is Fallon’s—the wrong one might destroy her completely.
Excerpt:
God, just his name made her stomach clench and a feeling of nausea roll through her. Even after all this time, she still felt as if she had to scrub every part of her body inside and out to rid herself of the vestiges of his control. How sick was that?
She was so preoccupied with her thoughts when she gave her car to the valet parking attendant, she didn’t look where she was going…
Until she bumped into someone and a hand closed over her arm.
“Well.” His mouth curved in that seductive smile that hid so much. “It’s been a very long time, Fallon. I understood you were hiding up in the Hill Country.”
She looked up to see him standing beside her, as if conjured by her very thoughts.
Brian Willoughby was tall; taller than Cord. So tall that when he stood next to her, he almost blocked the sun. And broad, every bit of him hard, solid muscle. His razor-cut blond hair still fell in precise lines to just above his collar and his deep blue eyes were still as chilly and penetrating. Power radiated from him, a power tinged with evil that unfortunately still had the ability to hypnotize Fallon in an instant.
At once her mind and body reacted, and she tried to push away the programmed response. Disaster and destruction were standing right in front of her if she didn’t get a grip. She knew exactly how junkies and alcoholics felt while trying to dry out. Nothing satisfied the sick hunger. Yet even knowing that, and with Claire’s conversation fresh in her mind, her body reacted automatically.
Think of Cord.
Fallon forced herself to breathe evenly. Heat burned her skin where his fingers rested on her arm. His touch was light but it might as well have been steel talons. She wanted to jerk away but the message didn’t seem to filter down from her brain.
“You heard wrong.” From somewhere she managed a hint of defiance in her tone. “I’m not hiding at all.”
“Oh?” He lifted one eyebrow in a too-familiar gesture. “I’ve missed seeing you.”
His fingers stroked her arm where they held her.
Ohgodohgodohgod.
She wet her lips. “I was just—reordering my priorities.”
His eyes raked over her. “I’ve missed you.” He took a step closer, shrinking the space between them. “You’ve missed me too. I know you have.” He bent his head so his mouth was at her ear. “You’ve missed me fucking you when you were bound so intricately you couldn’t move a muscle, and I could plow into you at will.”
His tone had that same compelling quality she couldn’t forget. She trembled at his words and the gush of fluid into her panties disgusted her. Yet at the same time, vivid images of the scene he described flashed into her mind and all the months dropped away. She found herself being lulled by him again. Falling into the same trap.
No! Cord! Think of Cord!
She extricated herself from his hold—but damn it, she missed his touch as soon as it was gone. “I have a new life. A better life. I could say it’s been nice running into you, but I’d be lying.”
He reached out and touched her cheek, his knuckles grazing the skin. The contact sizzled and another kaleidoscope of memories and sensations bombarded her.
No!
Finding courage she didn’t know she had, she backed away two steps and glanced at her watch.
“Sorry, Brian. I really have to run.”
